The Responsive Sampler

2026-03-27

Fixed axle is a different discipline. Not better or worse than unresponsive play. Just different. Different technique, different timing, different relationship between player and string. And it demands a different string.

The Responsive Sampler exists because the Responsive family at Throw-Yo has three distinct answers to that demand, and most players have only tried one of them.

Here’s what’s in it.

Pollen

100% cotton. The most traditional string in the lineup.

Pollen makes no compromises in either direction. It’s soft, grippy, and slow. Exactly what fixed axle asks for. No synthetic blend to extend the lifespan, no trilobal poly to add speed. Just cotton doing what cotton does, which is grip the axle, absorb the abuse, and play the way the oldest form of throwing was designed to play.

It won’t last forever. That’s not the point. The point is that while it lasts, nothing else in the lineup plays quite like it.

disposition: grippy // velocity: glacial // shelf life: moderate // feel: coarse

Nectar

Trilobal Poly / Cotton 25%/75%.

Nectar is Pollen with a longer shelf life. The cotton-forward construction keeps the grip and the slow, deliberate feel of a true fixed axle string. But 25% Trilobal Poly extends the lifespan well past what pure cotton can manage. Less frequent changes. More time throwing.

It’s not as soft as Pollen. The Trilobal adds a slight crispness that some players prefer and some don’t. If you’ve been throwing 100% cotton your whole life, Nectar will feel familiar but slightly more composed. If you’re new to fixed axle, it’s probably where you start.

disposition: crisp // velocity: glacial // shelf life: moderate // feel: slightly coarse

Spore

Cotton-wrapped Poly 100%. New to the lineup.

Spore is built differently from the other two. Where Pollen and Nectar are cotton or cotton-forward blends, Spore is a polyester core wrapped in cotton. Synthetic strength beneath natural feel. The poly core holds tension and resists wear long past the point where other strings have begun their slow decline. The cotton wrap keeps the hand soft, warm, and present.

It does not disappear into the play. It reminds you it is there.

Named for the mechanism by which certain organisms ensure continuation. Not through urgency, not through speed, but through quiet, patient dispersal. Spore is not the fastest string in the catalog. It is the one that will still be on your fixie when you finally decide to change throws.

disposition: grippy // velocity: slow // shelf life: enduring // feel: slightly coarse

Why a Sampler

The three strings in this pack are not interchangeable. There are three different answers to the same question, and the right answer depends on how you throw, what you’re throwing on, and what you want from a fixed axle session.

The sampler exists so you can find out which one is yours.

One Pollen. One Nectar. One Spore. Throw all three. Keep the one that fits.
